House Chartreaux's first daughter was something of a shock for Grundrisse Chartreaux, who had been expecting a boy in order to further enhance his claim to the Grisonheim manse. Her labour set with difficulties already, the birth left Anya Chartreaux weak of mind and body, and Belle found herself being raised by a hateful father and the family's only paid manservant, a moorish Estalian. When her family was welcomed back to Grisonheim, her life changed dramatically, becoming a whirlwind series of balls, suitors, and Bretonnian love affairs, each seeking to claim her hand and legitimize an arrangement between the two houses.
Belle came to believe in the Bretonnian's right to rule Grisonheim, even going so far as to quietly seek any oppurtunity to bring her father into a web of blackmail and schemes. She agitated against him, if only to spite her father, but it all came to naught when he announced he would never pay her dowry to a Bretonnian, and left the town a few years after they arrived. Her mother dying was the last straw: while she hated her father utterly, she collapsed inwards and gave in to his utter control of her life.
With the Al-Ulric riots, the Chartreaux family was forced to flee the town, hooking up with the Untergard pilgrims as an attempt by her father to discharge the temple gold and possibly find a way into the nobility, marrying her younger sister off to Viktor von Untergard. She is merely the packhorse of the family, even her ability to be resentful quashed under the weight of yet another humiliation.
