Living in the Border Princes, especially one so close to the edge of the Empire, is not much of a living for the fifth brother of a Noble family. Grundrisse set out on his own, not to become an adventurer, but to learn a trade and ply it. He chose to do this in the city of Altdorf, where he used what little money he'd inherited from his father to open a butcher's shop. By the age of twenty, he owned seven shops in Altdorf, as well as slaughterhouses, market stalls, and a sizeable estate. When he learned of his brothers' financial misfortunes, he graciously purchased their titles from them, and returned to his home town of Grisonheim as the one true lord.
Unfortunately, the valley is and was a strategic location for trade, and Grundrisse and his family soon became the target of assassins and agitators looking to officially make the town part of Bretonnia for good. Unwilling to denounce the country that had provided his lifestyle, Grundrisse was forced to return to his wife's homeland. Even after her death to Nurgle's Pox, Grundrisse was content to stay in Altdorf until he and his family were mistaken for Ulric supporters and forced out of the city in the Al-Ulric riots.
Despite their poverty, he and his family are the caretakers of the gold of Altdorf's temple. He views this as a obligation that hangs on his every thought and action, driving him to madness.
