In Nomine Redux and O.M.N.I.: King of Kings TPB

King of Kings is the first TPB after Cross closed its doors, and really shows the capabilities of new writer Leonard Warrens. King of Kings had a year's worth of hype building up to it: Mike Montoya's embezzlement scandal and subsequent return to publishing made the story behind the comic's publishing just as notable as the story inside.

The secret society INRI has been turning to for funding is revealed to be the Rogue Isles' Gentlemen's Club, which is itself a front for The True In Nomine. Discovering this through detective work and luck, INRI returns to the team only to discover that they're in a pitched battle with the Circle of Thorns. Sergeant Krieger, who was masquerading as a reformed member of In Nomine, springs the trap to capture INRI amidst the commotion. In the black helicopter that flies them away, INRI starts to talk to Sgt. Krieger about their past together, revealing that the two were both members of a unit that worked for "The True In Nomine". Krieger realises who is truly talking through INRI as the helicopter is destroyed in a nuclear explosion.

The rest of In Nomine races to O.M.N.I. to rescue INRI, only to find that no one at O.M.N.I. knows what they are talking about. Krieger's about-face was complete news to them. Meanwhile, Krieger (shown for the first time out of his costume) arrives on the shore of Mercy Island, blown to hell and spitting blood, carrying INRI's CPU. (In a mocking reference to the first movie, he sarcastically calls it 'the sacred spirit matrix.')

In this, the first real arc that explores why the three factions are enemies, In Nomine Redux find themselves squaring off against O.M.N.I. in a veritable fortress of high tech weaponry and defenses. (Max Browning shows off some interesting colouring techniques, with the same techniques used in Malibu Comics at the time.)

During a particularly climactic scene, Iggy shows his first dark colors by threatening to break Sgt. Krieger's neck, shaking him like a twig, only to find a blade through his chest. (The blade is revealed to be Dust Spider's; he wouldn't get his trademark spines until later issues, when his more human background was replaced with genetic engineering.) This causes a wound that bothers Ignorant Mass for several pages. With both teams in disarray, The True In Nomine strikes, revealing the extent of its mystical backing and power to manipulate both teams.

The two teams readily agree to work together (except for Desecratress, who finally agrees only because of unresolved personal business between her and Lord Wellington), managing to fight off the interlopers and destroying their emergency teleporter. Kreiger then executes his former Commanding Officer after giving a short speech about how evil is not the way to power, which is all he's interested in.

Afterwards, Krieger agrees to provide INRI with a new body out of nostalgia for his time in INR. The comic closes on a nervous Iggy and Sanctity exchanging fearful looks in an O.M.N.I. hospital facility.
