In Nomine (the movie)

In Nomine was the cheesy, live-action, direct-to-video movie from the 80's. Only the most hardcore of fans can stand to watch it anymore, but they love it with a fervour that borders on (dare we say it?) religious fanaticism.

The movie starts halfway through the original In Nomine storyline, just after the mists have descended. Purifier narrates the backstory for those that have not read the comic, and the movie starts well; ultimately, however, the costumes destroy any credibility he may have given. Sanctity's costume was "re-designed"; indeed, it looks as though she was refitted with Robin's costume from the 1960s Batman series, dyed black and red. INRI's actor is often quite visible through the costume, and INRI's normally aesthetically-pleasing sword is reduced to nothing more than an extremely cheap-looking boffer blade. Only Ignorant Mass and Purifier escape bad costume design, and even then, Ignorant Mass is obviously wearing platform shoes in order to make him seem two feet taller than the rest of the cast.

That said, the movie provides a resolution to the Dark Astoria storyline (never provided by the comics); Purifier discovers the source of the Mists (a giant machine that consumes corpses, spitting out ghosts and choking the air) and sacrifices himself nobly in order to stop their spread. INRI is given a rare moment of humanitas as he holds Purifier's bullet-riddled body, although most fans agree that his "NOOOOOOO!" when Purifier passes out is extreme (and campy).

No indication is given that Sanctity and Ignorant Mass are romantically inclined to one another; in fact, their relationship seems to be one of a loving older sister and her slow brute of a younger brother. Of course, Purifier does not die; he leaves at the end of the movie vowing to find those that made the Mist-machines, while Sanctity, INRI and Ignorant Mass agree to stay behind and guard the Vatican.

Issues

This is the only movie that Mike Montoya will comment on, and the only one that stars Purifier.

Iggy/Sanctity fans sometimes complain about the removal of the romantic sub-plot, but mostly agree that the costume is a worse travesty.

Quotes

Mike Montoya: "Well, I mean, what can I say? How did such a good cop become such a bad priest? It's one of the seven famous narratives, man."

Sanctity: (quoting the Bible) "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

Purifier: (cocking his gun) "I always preferred a gun, myself."
