In Nomine Redux
A few years after the aborted In Nomine series, wizkid comics creator and new head of Cross Art Mike Montoya declared a revival of the series. Called In Nomine Redux, the new series picked up in media res: INRI, fighting crime in a grittier, post-Rikti invasion Paragon City (the Rikti event was never directly referenced in the original series, and this seemed like a good point to set the redesign), has become a violent and friendless urban warrior. Through first person captions (narrated by someone hinted to be a dead Father Dominic), we learn that Purifier has gone missing somehow, that Ignorant Mass and Sanctity have broken up and both quit the team, and INRI has been hiding that he has not actually been cured of the Clockwork King's influence.
Ultimately, INRI and Sanctity (now a suburban housewife with Empty Nest Syndrome) reteam with some new heroes to revive In Nomine. With the help of new members Doc B, Sister Teresia and Fireaxe, In Nomine is reformed as In Nomine Redux. The Church maintains a less active role in their lives, now, stating that less money from parishoners means less funding that the Vatican can provide. The new team finds funding from another group that INRI has been dealing with for replacement parts, and the group moves out to fight crime.
The new series is edgier, with the moral issues being less simple than they were in the old pre-Rikti war days. The Hellions the group used to fight become a gang that steals to survive, and the members themselves are less confident about their place in a world of superheroes with much better funding and ability to handle these moral issues. Montoya's steady hand, right down to the hiring of Eddie Valos (the original Matchbox artist) to do all the the covers, kept the series going for 44 strong issues. Ultimately, Cross shut down, although Montoya's new publishing house with Eddie Valos, "Matchcross", continues to release TPBs. Matchcross also has plans for an animated movie of the INR series.
