Born in New York around the same time that the Son of Sam started murdering people, Cara Fredrickson was a quiet child. Her parents, both professionals that highlighted scholastic achievement, encouraged her to read often. Rook picked up the habit and was a voracious reader all through her youth.
The family moved to Kitchener-Waterloo when Cara was young (5), trying to escape the fear of violence that permeated New York. Cara read, and studied, and read more; any topic fascinated her, particularly the humanities. She eventually went to the University of Waterloo, and later to the University of Western Ontario, getting a degree in Library Sciences. She returned to UW as a librarian.
It was during her master's studies that she chanced across the newspaper coverage of the Son of Sam.
